How to Make Big Money With Your Small Business

Imagine you owned a business, and in that business your only responsibilities were to do the things you loved doing and were good at.

The stuff that - to you - was boring or hard was taken care of by one of your employees whose strengths were your weaknesses.

For most beginning or prospective entrepreneurs, such a business could never be a reality in their minds.

But if you’re thinking things like, “I’m not sure I have enough money to start my business, I certainly can’t think about having an employee any time in the foreseeable future,” or “I want to work from home, I have no interest in employees and all the hassle that comes with managing them,” then prepare to have your mind changed a little bit.

The realities of the internet, and the increasing number of people that want to work from home, make it very possible for you to run your small business like a big company.

And to do it from your home.

And to do it without any employees.

Let’s talk about how to set your small business up for big profits from the very beginning, and how to get you to the place where you’re doing only the work you enjoy as soon as possible.

Hiring Versus Outsourcing

The first bit of good news is that you don’t have to hire any employees.

Not now, and not ever if you don’t want to.

Instead, you can take the tasks you don’t enjoy and/or aren’t good at and outsource them to a freelancer who will serve as an independent contractor rather than an employee.

There are many advantages to outsourcing.

You don’t have to worry about filling out forms and paying taxes on employee wages. At most, you’ll have to send a simple form at the end of the year stating how much you paid the outsourcer.

You don’t have to worry about having a lengthy screening and interviewing process because you can make micro commitments to your outsourcers, hiring them to do a $20 project and moving on from there if you’re happy with the outsourcer’s work.

While you certainly can have virtual employees, outsourcers are always virtual. They want to work from home, it’s what they’re set up to do, so you don’t have to worry about having space for another person to come into your home.

How to Start and Afford Outsourcing

Sounds great but what kinds of things can an outsourcer do for you and how will you afford it if you aren’t even in profit yet?

The thing about outsourcing is most people wait too long to do it, or never do it, because they’re waiting to feel like they can afford it.

If you wait until you feel financially secure in your business you’ll never do it.

You’ll either end up with a business that never makes a consistent income, a business that has you so stressed out it’s not worth it, or you’ll get frustrated and just give up.

The key to successful outsourcing in the beginning is to start small.

Dip your toe in the water and spend $5-$20 having someone do something for you just to prove to yourself that someone else can take charge of even just a tiny slice of your business.

As for what you can have someone do for you, start by looking at what you need to get done and don’t want to do.

Maybe you aren’t a strong writer. Hire someone to write an article for you that you can use on your blog and/or for social media posting and emailing.

Maybe you need a logo and haven’t a design bone in your body. Hire someone to design it for you.

One good way to figure out what tasks others can take on for you is to browse the outsourcing sites and see what people are offering.

Eventually, you’ll be looking at everything you do in your business with an eye to, “Could someone else do this?”

Where to Find Outsourcers

There are a nearly endless number of places to do this, but let’s talk about some that have a good reputation and are affordable.

If you’re really nervous about outsourcing and/or are on a strict budget, start at Fiverr.com.

The site was originally intended to be a place where you could go to get just about anything done for $5. While that may be a possibility, expect to pay up to $20 to get something really helpful done with the quality you’d want.

Other places to go are:

Searching for an outsourcer can become a pretty time-consuming endeavor, so keep in mind that you’re starting small, and you may have a few less than perfect experiences until you get the hang of how to best identify what and who you’re looking for.

Don’t spend all day picking out someone to do your $20 project.

Fortunately, virtually all outsourcing sites are set up so that your payment isn’t released to the outsourcer until you’ve received the completed project. That helps eliminate the scammers who would just take your money and run or give you something unusable.

Your potential outsourcers will also have samples available, as well as customer ratings and feedback, which means your chances of getting a complete dud are slim.

Think Long Term

Once you get the hang of outsourcing, you’ll likely find that you have created a trusted collection of people that you either consistently provide work to, or can go to as needed. This will drastically cut down on the time it takes you to get work outsourced.

Remember, like anything, there’s a learning curve here.

Yes, you may have a less than perfect experience every now and then, especially at first.

And yes, it may take you longer to get the instructions to the outsourcer than it would take you to do it yourself, at first.

But once you’ve found “your person,” she’ll be able to do what you need quicker than you can, better than you can, and cheaper than you can.

And as always, if you want help with starting your business, Kids Party Characters owner Cheryl Jacobs is here for you.

She went through the growing pains of learning entrepreneurship and can help you avoid the big mistakes and get your business off to a fast start.

5 Must Have Tools for Work at Home Moms

If you’re a mom, you know the phrase “work at home mom” is rather redundant.

We refer to moms who stay home with their kids and don’t have a revenue-generating job as “stay at home moms,” but we all know that’s the crowd with the toughest job of all.

You’re required to have flexible hours, meaning you’re on call 24/7.

You get no sick days, no vacation days, and no option to put in your two week notice if it all becomes just too much.

Of course there is that one thing that makes it worth the lousy hours, lack of pay, and absence of any benefits package.

Seeing that first step is priceless, as is being able to meaningfully engage with your kids and be their main source of influence each day.

Comforting their pains, helping them form their first words, watching them in baby gymnastics or music or art class are all priceless experiences that we’d never trade in for an uncomfortable suit and a paycheck.

But let’s face it, as a stay at home mom your plate is full.

While you may have the desire (or necessity) to transition into work at home mom status, whatever your motivation, it’s definitely not because you’re sitting around all day with too much time on your hands.

If you’ve tried working from home and can’t figure out how to juggle all the balls, or if just the thought of it is keeping you from even taking the plunge into starting your own home based business, don’t give up yet.

You can do it, you’re just going to need some tools that are unique to moms, and that you don’t often hear about when you’re researching how to be more productive in your business.

Yes, all the productivity and automation apps that help you run the mechanics of your business are great, but what happens when you can’t even get enough free time to learn and implement the things that are suppose to make your business easy?

You know, when you need automation tools to automate your automation tools. . .

Unfortunately there’s no magic button to push that saves you from doing the work, but hey, if there was, everyone would be doing it and there wouldn’t be enough to go around for you.

But there are several tools you can have in your work at home mom bag that may not be obvious, but that can be the little things that make the big difference when it comes to building a business that brings in a consistent income.

Today we’ll look at five that you may not have thought of, or appreciated how valuable they can be for your business.

1. Voice Memo and Transcription Apps

Your phone likely comes with a voice memo app, which is great for taking down those new ideas you have while driving to volleyball practice or waiting in the school pick up line.

Don’t think you’ll remember it for later, you won’t.

Capture all your content ideas, product ideas, and to-dos in voice memos and sort them out when you’re working at home.

Even more useful are speech to text apps that will actually transcribe what you say and have it ready for you to send to someone, publish on social media, or just add to your notes on a project.

Google docs has a free speech to text feature that is mostly accurate.

You can search the app store for other options if you like. Transcribe - Speech to Text is a popular one, although there is a small fee attached to it after a free trial. Speechnotes is another option that delivers accurate transcription.

Don’t underestimate what you can get done here.

As moms we often work in shorter blocks of time than others do, which can be a blessing.

If you know you only have 15 minutes to get something done, you can often do it in 15 minutes, where it would take 30 if you gave yourself that much time.

With a voice to text app, you can turn 15 minutes of what would be wasted time waiting for your child, into 30 minutes of productive work time.

These apps are also great for when you’re at home, but don’t have two free hands to get done all you had planned for your work day.

2. Education and Relaxation Apps

There are two apps that are especially helpful in the areas of education and relaxation, both of which are essential to your business.

Nearly all successful entrepreneurs say that reading relevant business, personal development, and even fiction books has had a tremendous impact on their business development.

An Audible subscription will allow you to pursue your business education in the car, while laying down with your kids for nap, and even during halftime at their games.

Yes, there is a small monthly fee associated with it, but it’s more than worth it. You can also check out your library’s collection of audiobooks if you’re looking for a no-cost way to get started and you have the ability to download them.

As for relaxation, we often accept that we’re moms and our days are crazy busy and we just don’t have time for a break until we fall exhausted into bed.

But taking short breaks during the day will dramatically improve your productivity.

So drop the supermom expectation and listen to your body and your mind.

You don’t need an hour, sometimes 5 minutes will do the trick to re-energize you and allow you to get focused and back on track.

Installing the free Insight Timer app on your phone will help you take these little breaks and get your brain to quickly turn off and focus on mindfulness and being present.

Insight Timer is a great choice because it has over 10,000 meditations to choose from, including many that are five minutes or less in length.

There’s also something for everyone, including just music, guided meditations, and affirmations. It's available in the App Store and on Google Play.

3. On the Move Office Supplies

For you, get a stack of 3x5 colored index cards (less chance of losing them if they’re colored) and three or four notebooks.

Use the index cards to keep a running to-do list of smaller, non-urgent items. When you find yourself with an extra 10-15 minutes you won’t waste five of them trying to figure out what you can get done.

Just go automatically to your card and knock off a task or two.

Keep a notebook in your bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom, anywhere you spend time not working.

You’ll find these “off hours” can be when your greatest ideas come to you, and you’ll want to capture them in a notebook or they will get lost in all the other stuff that’s constantly filling up your brain.

For your kids, keep a collection of “office supplies” for them that can include paper, colors, colored pencils, scissors, and tape flags.

When you need to get something done, but also need to entertain them, try engaging them in a “work” project with you.

It could involve copying words from a book, coloring a picture of something, cutting out certain shapes, or taking one of your books and putting tape flags at the beginning of each chapter or wherever they see a certain word that occurs several times in the book.

The activity will of course depend on your child’s age, and as they get older they can even help you with some of your actual work.

You’ll find engaging them in a work project with you is more effective than telling them to go away and find something to do while you finish up your task.

It also helps you resist the urge to hire your television as a babysitter.

4. Whiteboard

This is another tool that benefits both you and the kids.

Make sure your whiteboard is big enough to see across the room or as you walk by it.

List your big, must-do tasks for the day, as well as things you’ll be doing with your kids.

For example, your list may say:

Client call
Draft blog post
Social media interaction
Park

This is an easy way for you to check in with yourself throughout the day to make sure you’re focused on what’s important and staying on track.

It’s also a good way to help your kids understand how the day will go, learn patience, and provide encouragement to you.

They can see you check things off as you complete them, or can check them off for you.

Even kids who can’t read can understand that after these three check marks, we’ll head to the park.

5. Manual Kitchen Timer

A final tool that again benefits you and the kids is one of those loud, and arguably obnoxious, kitchen timers that you turn by hand and set to the desired number.

As we’ve talked about before when discussing the Pomodoro Technique, these timers are really helpful when it comes to blocking your time and working for focused periods without interruption.

They’re also easy for your kids to use, and take the mystery out of when that 15 minutes you’re talking about will be up, or when it’ll be time for you to make lunch, or even how much play time you have left before it’s time to go down for naps.

The key with tools like this is that in addition to benefitting you, they’re also easy for your child to see, use, understand, and relate to.

In addition to those we’ve talked about today, keep your eyes open for anything else that can help your child buy into and understand a schedule that doesn’t include devoting 100% of your time and energies to him.

And remember, having you work at home will be an adjustment for everyone. To the extent that your child’s old enough, keep the lines of communication open as to what’s working and what changes you can put in place to make everyone happier.

Even beyond words, look for body language, and changes in behaviors and moods.

Never think you have to settle for sacrificing some of your child’s happiness to make this work thing work out.

There is a way to make everyone happy, especially as your children get older and you can simply say, “If you want that Disney cruise this summer, give me one hour to finish this project!”

4 Ways to End Sibling Rivalry

If there’s one problem even the most perfect families, the closest families, and the “best” parents haven’t figured out how to solve, it’s sibling rivalry.

If you have more than one child, there’s going to be trouble between them, and probably sooner rather than later.

And when you think about it, it does make sense.

Your first child is the center of your universe.

You shower all your attention on her and do everything just right.

But when baby number two comes along, her world is rocked.

It’s not just that you now have to split your attentions 50/50.  This new little creature requires so much of mom’s time it’s more like a 90/10 split.

So even if the older child or children love the new baby from day one, there’s also an automatic battle for attention that will go on for years to come.

Yes, the arguments against just having one child are solid, but there will inevitably be days when you begin to understand why that woman you heard about on the news locked her kids in the closet.

How do you handle these days without losing your mind?

You start by having a long-term strategy that works to lessen sibling rivalry in your family’s everyday life.

There are four big strategies you can implement to help keep the peace when tempers start to flair.

1. Focus on Each Child’s Strengths

Figuring out each child’s strengths and interests won’t be hard.

If you’ll focus on what each child is good at and enjoys most, you’ll take the competition out of every little thing they do.

Some kids are strong athletes, some good at academics, others excel at the arts.

Some are planners, some are doers, some good at mental games, others at physical games.

Look for what your child is drawn to and resist the urge to sign everyone up for soccer because that way you only have to drive one place for practices and games.

Assign family chores and responsibilities around each child’s uniqueness.

Avoid overtly labeling your kids as the “smart one,” the “star athlete,” and things of that nature because it will stir up some jealousy.

But if you play to your kids’ strengths they’re more likely to focus on what they’re good at and enjoy, rather than trying to out-preform each other at every turn.

2. Schedule One on One Time

When it comes down to it, sibling rivalry is often about nothing more than the need for attention.

Every child wants to be the favorite, and wants to be vindicated when things happen that in his mind are “not fair.”

A good deal of sibling rivalry can be eliminated if each child knows he has some time with you alone to look forward to.

Try your best to schedule 10-15 minutes a day for each child.

This might involve reading an age-appropriate book only to the small child, doing a more complex chore with an older child, even having each child do something with you that you have to do anyway, such as fixing dinner.

Once a month, schedule an outing for you and just one child.

This can be something big like a professional sporting event for the one that loves sports, or as simple as a trip to the park where your child doesn’t have to share your attentions with the other kids.

Try to let each child pick her outing for the month, with necessary guidance to the one who wants dinner in Paris for her one-on-one time.

3. Look for Team Building Projects

Look for things your kids can work on together that will result in a happy outcome for all.

This could be a totally recreational event like playing dodgeball together at the trampoline park.

It could be constructing a pillow fort together or completing a project around the house that you’ve agreed to pay them for and put the money towards an activity they’re all interested in.

It could be a community service project, starting a family YouTube channel, or planning the next family vacation.

Your imagination and theirs is the limit here, the point is to just get them working together for a common purpose so they’ll have that positive experience to call upon internally when conflicts arise.

4. Stop Playing Referee

Part of the exhaustion of the whole sibling rivalry thing is the impossibility of us as parents effectively resolving things.

When your kids know they’re on their own, that fact alone reduces the squabbling that’s done just to get your attention.

The next few times you hear the call of, “Mom, Johnny took my toy and it’s my turn,” calmly ask them to work it out on their own.

When your kids know they can’t draw you in at any moment by the latest crisis, the conflicts will have a way of never developing and/or working themselves out quicker and without your involvement.

Embracing the Inevitable

At the end of the day, when it feels like none of the advice you’ve read works for your family in your situation, first, realize everyone feels that way some days!

And second, accept that there will always be some amount of sibling rivalry and that it can actually be healthy.

Throughout their lives, your kids will encounter conflicts.

They’ll be around unkind kids, grow up to work with people they don’t like and have bosses that aren’t fair.

If you’ve implemented strategies for minimizing and dealing with the sibling conflicts, it will prepare your kids to deal with outside conflicts that are just a part of life.

Creating Lasting Memories

Just like we talked about looking for team building projects that will create a sense of togetherness for your children, a consistent effort to make lasting memories will subconsciously help your kids have more positive reactions to one another.

When your child is faced with a conflict, and the person on the other end of that conflict is someone they’ve played at the pool with, had family picnics in the park with, discovered new creatures with during a nature hike, their positive experiences with that other child will help them resolve the conflict in a more loving manner.

Think about this as an adult. When someone does something that upsets us, we’re much more forgiving if that person is a friend than if it’s that guy in the office you’ve never liked anyway.

At KidsPartyCharacters.com we specialize in helping you create magical lasting memories.

Whether it’s a birthday celebration or a “just because” celebration of family, Kids Party Characters has over 200 characters your children can invite to the party, along with packages that include face painting, balloon twisting, and cotton candy.

And when you put the party in our hands, you can sit back and enjoy with the kids as our professional entertainers put on a show that will leave your children talking about it for years to come.

3 No-Cost Places to Find Customers for Your New Business

One of the biggest barriers for aspiring entrepreneurs is worry that if they do start their own business, they don’t know how they’ll acquire a consistent stream of customers.

You know you have a quality product or service, you wouldn’t be offering it for sale if you didn’t, but how do you get it into the hands of the people who need and want it?

Despite having the heart of an entrepreneur, many of us hate sales, and as a consequence we aren’t that good at it.

And even if we were comfortable being the stereotypical salesperson, in your face and pushy tactics don’t even work well anymore.

But customers are the lifeblood of your business.

Gary Halbert, one of the greatest copywriters of all time, teaches the lesson in his letter titled The One Advantage

During one of the classes he was teaching, Gary asked the students, "If you and I both owned a hamburger stand and we were in a contest to see who could sell the most hamburgers, what advantages would you most like to have on your side to help you win?"

Gary’s answer?

“The only advantage I want is a starving crowd!”

But how do you find that starving crowd?

You certainly can’t afford TV or even radio or magazine advertising. Maybe you’ve heard of things like Google Adwords and Facebook Ads, but again, there’s the money thing, and the time and talent it takes to create a winning ad.

For the new business owner looking to build a consistent client base, there are three no-cost advertising methods that can be just as effective, if not more so, than paid advertisements.

These are not overnight success, magic button solutions. If you don’t spend money on advertising, you’re going to spend time. But it will be time spent in exchange for a worthy payout.

1. Social Media Networks

If you want to find clients, go to where your starving crowd is.

And social media is where we do everything these days.

Initially, the thought of social media advertising brings up two negative reactions for some people.

First, I don’t wanna be “that” person

So you have a Facebook friend who posts daily about the fabulous new weight loss business she’s involved in and if you’ll just message her she can hook you up to be 30 pounds lighter in 30 days.

Maybe you’ve even had to hide her posts, though she is a sweet person with a good heart.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be that person.

You can set up a business page on Facebook where you share stories and invite people who are interested to connect with your business.

You can have separate accounts for your business on Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube, and even LinkedIn if you want (although LinkedIn is more about business connections than friend connections).

And while it’s a topic for another day, you don’t have to spend all your time pushing your product on social media.

You can use it as a place where people interested in your product or services can get to know, like, and trust you.

Second, I don’t have time to be on social media all day, every day

Exactly, you’re starting your business from home because you still want to be around to raise your kids and take care of your family, not because you’re looking for a 40 hour a week job.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be everywhere.

Starting out, you can pick two social media networks that you enjoy and that your ideal customers hang out on.

You can create one piece of content and modify it to fit both places you have a presence.

Or you can create one big piece of content on Monday and break it up into chunks, giving yourself an entire week’s worth of content from one effort.

And once the money train gets rolling, you can even hire someone to help spread your content out on more than those two places.

Don’t look at some of the big brands and influencers and think, “I could never do that.”

Social media is the place even the little gal can succeed with some persistence.

2. Forums and Groups

Let’s say you run a children’s entertainment business like Kid’s Party Characters.

Who’s your starving crowd? Mom’s with younger kids.

Your job then is to find out where they hang out online.

When it comes to moms with young kids this is an easy task, as there are an endless number of groups.

First, go to the Facebook search bar and start typing in things like “mom’s groups,” “how to raise children,” and “parent support groups.”

You could find enough groups to keep you busy on Facebook alone.

You can also do a Google search for mom forums, parenting forums, raising kids forums . . . use the same search terms you came up with for Facebook and add the word “forum” behind them.

Join as many as you can handle, and you’ll pretty quickly find 2-5 that are the most active and the best fit for you.

Again, you don’t have to push your product or service.

Just add value to the discussion and offer to connect privately about your business when someone expresses a need you can fill.

Many groups have one day every week or month where members can post a link to any business they have. Take advantage of these approved times to promote yourself.

Most forums allow you to have a “signature” at the end of each post you make. You can put your website address in your signature so that it shows up with your name every time you post, but you aren’t doing any overt advertising.

On Facebook, you can post as your business page so that when someone hovers over your name, the information about your business and link to that page appears for them to check out.

3. Offline Advertising

There are a lot of passive ways you can advertise your business offline.

Have a t-shirt made with an attention-grabbing company catch phrase or slogan on the back, put a bumper sticker or small magnet on your car.

Something like, “Ask me how I can bring magic to your child’s next party,” followed by your website and phone number will get you more inquires than you might think.

Sign up with your local chamber of commerce and get your name listed in the book they put out of area small businesses.

Lots of local coffee shops and restaurants have bulletin boards where you can tack up a business card or small flyer.

If you want to become a little more active, there are several offline opportunities there too.

Join a BNI group or a MeetUp group where you can go socialize with others and get known in your local community as the woman who knows how to throw the best kid’s party ever.

Set up a booth at a local trade show or expo that targets moms.

As you’ve hopefully heard, Kids Party Characters is coming to Houston, Texas very soon.

Owner Cheryl Jacobs met the new owner of Kids Party Characters Houston at a trade show in that city.

Once you get a little money, you can also help sponsor local kid-friendly events, which will get your business name on a shirt and/or in the organization’s promotional materials, and may get you the right to set up a booth at the event.

Want Some Help Getting Started?

All of the ways we’ve talked about today are proven methods for finding your starving crowd. They’re things we do or have done here at Kids Party Characters to grow a six figure business.

Kids Party Characters owner Cheryl Jacobs has learned a lot by trial and error, and she’s here to help you cut out some of the frustration and do things right from day one.
