What’s that you say, you didn’t make any Labor Day resolutions?
Yes, it is typically a “New Year” thing, but for moms, the time right around Labor Day is really more of a time for change than January 1 is.
With the kids going back to school or starting school, everything changes.
There are new routines, new bed times, new sports seasons, and different challenges brought on by new school work and teachers.
And, as fast as life moves, the holidays are just around the corner and you’ll soon start thinking about all the things you’re going to do bigger and better next year.
That’s the beauty of Labor Day resolutions.
You don’t have to wait until next year. And since most people are, you have a chance to jump in and make things happen this year while everyone else is wasting time and coasting into the new year.
When it comes to business, this is a great time to get a jump on the competition.
Don’t worry about it if this is your first time hearing about the advantages of Labor Day resolutions, it’s not too late to get yours going.
2018 Can Still Be Your Year
Yes, we’re in the last quarter of the year, but with a solid plan, you can get more done in the next four months than you’ve gotten done all year, without working four times harder than you have all year.
While the idea of resolutions is a good analogy, it’s only a starting point.
Let’s face it, the number of people who actually keep their New Year’s Resolutions is about 8%, and that’s certainly not the result we’re looking for.
So let’s start by reframing a bit and thinking in terms of your Labor Day commitments.
With school bringing about a lot of forced changes, this is a good time to change up your habits and bring them in line with the commitments you’ve made.
When you’re in the routine of getting up whenever you want and having a donut for breakfast, and now the routine has changed to getting up at 6:30 and getting lunches packed and kids out the door, it becomes much easier to lose the donut habit as part of your new routine.
About All Those Excuses
The first step to being successful in achieving your new commitment is getting your mindset right.
Get excited about partnering with your kids and facing a new experience like the one they’re just now adjusting to.
Decide what commitment you’d like to make happen, and write down all the reasons you haven’t made it happen yet.
Chances are great that the reasons are excuses you’ve been telling yourself, maybe even good excuses, but are they good enough to keep you from something that’s really important to your quality of life or your dreams?
The thing about excuses is they never resolve themselves.
Your excuses never go away until you just commit to rejecting them and moving ahead in spite of them.
A popular excuse right now is “I don’t have time.”
And when you look ahead into the next four months that excuse becomes very socially acceptable, because we all know what a busy time the holidays can be.
But the fact is, you’ll never have time unless you simply choose to make time.
It’s kind of like having kids. If you waited until the timing was perfect, the human race would have died out many years ago.
You’ve just gotta take the leap and figure out the details on the way down.
A staircase will appear or a parachute will open for you, I promise.
Making Your New Business Your New Commitment
You can set any goal, or commitment, or resolution you’d like to end 2018 with a bang, but a great one to consider is getting that new business you’ve been thinking about up and running.
Whether you’ve actively worked on starting a business or whether it’s something that’s just come up in the back of your mind in the form of, “I’d love to do that, but . . .” now’s a great time to get going.
Not only is your competition lower right now, but chances are your market is in the buying mode right now too.
Many entrepreneurs who seize the opportunities of the fourth quarter report that December was their best month of the year.
And while this may seem like a busy time, remember that you’ve just gained a substantial number of hours by having your kids back in school.
Best case scenario, they’re in school 30 hours a week, which means you’ve got 30 extra hours every week.
That’s almost enough time for a full time job.
Even if 30 hours aren’t freed up under your particular circumstances, the good news is you’ll only have to carve out about 10 of those hours a week to get your business to the point of having an “open” sign in its virtual window.
The Cure for Business Overwhelm
If you’re still feeling a little uncertain, or even a lot, that’s natural.
But don’t let it scare you away from making your business dream come true sooner rather than later.
Let’s face it, there’ll never be enough time, or money, you’ll never have the “perfect” idea, or know exactly what the end goal of your business is.
The good news is, it’s okay to start small. You don’t need a six figure empire by Christmas.
But what if you have five customers by then?
When you’re starting with zero, that’s a lot.
And while it certainly comes nowhere near meeting the goals of a successful business, every business starts with one customer, and every little step you take today is one step in the right direction towards your desired outcome.
